Buccaneer Archipelago, Horizontal Falls, Montgomery Reef, Prince Regent River, Kings Cascade, Mitchell Fall, Mitchell River, Berkeley River

Day 1: Broome

In the afternoon, board the Eco Abrolhos boat to begin your adventure. Watch the sun set from prime position on the top deck as you enjoy a glass of champagne and meet the guests and crew who will be your family for the next two weeks.

Day 2: Buccaneer Archipelago, Horizontal Falls, Raft Point

Cruise across the Buccaneer Archipelago where thousands of tiny islands are located. Stop for your first swim of the trip at Crocodile Creek – don’t be fooled by the name as it’s one of the few spots that don’t have crocodiles! Next up is the famous Horizontal Falls, a natural phenomenon caused by the large tidal movements in the Kimberley. As the tide recedes, millions of litres of water rush through narrow cliffs, creating a waterfall effect. You’ll have the option to take a speed boat ride through the falls (own expense).

After lunch, head to Raft Point to try and spot whales during sunset.

Day 3: Raft Point, Montgomery Reef, Doubtful Bay

Wake up with the towering rock bluffs of Raft Point as your backdrop. After breakfast, head to Montgomery Reef and board the tenders to get up close to turtles, manta rays, sharks and possibly even a dugong. Head back to the boat, then cruise to Doubtful Bay for a swim and a chance to do some fishing.

Day 4: Raft Point, Freshwater Cove

Begin your morning with a trek up Raft Point where you’ll see some Wandjina rock art and learn the history of the area. Next it’s onward to Freshwater Cove to visit the art gallery run by locals where you’ll also have the option to go on a bush tucker tour (own expense).

Day 5: Camden Harbour

Explore the ruins of Camden Harbour where, in 1864, pioneers attempted to create a settlement. The harsh Kimberley conditions prevailed and the settlement failed within a year with many perishing.

Spend the afternoon relaxing onboard or fishing from one of the tenders.

Day 6: Prince Regent River, King’s Cascade, St George’s Basin

Cruise up the Prince Regent River, starting with St George’s Basin. Reach King’s Cascade Falls and climb up the falls to take a refreshing dip in the crystal clear pool at the top.

Day 7: Hunter River, Mitchell Falls

Spend the day at the spectacular Hunter River. Hike, fish or relax onboard. There’s also the option to take a helicopter flight over the Mitchell Falls (own expense) which is always highly recommended.

Day 8: Bigge Island, Mitchell River

It’s an early morning for the captain as you leave for Mitchell River. Stop by Bigge Island for a swim and to explore some of the caves along the beach. See some more Wandjina rock art and the burial site of one of the Wunambal people. Reaching the Mitchell River, it’s time to do some fishing – who can catch the biggest barra?

Day 9: Mitchell River

Spend the full day at Mitchell River – take a hike up to a waterhole for a refreshing dip, do some fishing and mudcrabbing or just relax and take in the beauty of the cliffs surrounding you.

Day 10: Vansittart Bay

The day is spent at Vansittart Bay, home to the incredible and mysterious Bradshaw rock art. You’ll also see the DC-3 wreck, left behind during WWII after its pilot crash landed. In the afternoon, relax and swim on the beach.

Day 11: King George River

Wake up to see one of the greatest Kimberley icons, the King George River as your backdrop. there are plenty photo opportunities along this mighty river with gorges and the the highest single drop waterfall in Western Australia. You may want to climb to the top of the falls for an even better view.

Day 12: Berkeley River, Casuarina Falls

Leave the giant King George River for the beautiful Berkeley. The narrow gorge mean that only small vessels such as Eco Abrolhos can squeeze through. Board the tenders and explore the waterways. This is your last chance to catch a barra and with all the practice you’ve had over the last 12 days, you’ll hopefully come back to the boat with dinner freshly caught.

After lunch, cruise back to the mouth of the Berkeley River to spend the afternoon at Casuarina Falls to beachcomb, swim or fish.

Day 13: Onboard

Wave goodbye to the Berkeley and to the Kimberley as the Eco Abrolhos sets course for Darwin. Spend your day onboard, reminiscing about your favourite spots, swapping emails and photos with your newfound friends and planning your next adventure.

Day 14: Darwin

Unfortunately, it’s time to disembark! Arrive in Darwin by 8am and head to your hotel or the airport – hopefully we’ll see you again soon!

Mont Albert North, Victoria
The owner and skipper of Great Escape has the formula for this just perfect. Casual, but everything just worked perfectly. The travel arrangements to join the boat were exciting (light plane into bush strip), and the Jetranger heli on board made everything very accessible.
