Day 1: Wyndham

You’ll be picked up from the hotel or the airport in Kununurra for the coach transfer to Wyndham to meet the True North. Embark at 5pm – time for a cocktail before departing at 6.30pm. Enjoy your first onboard dinner before leaving port.

Day 2: The Berkeley, Koolama Bay

Wake up to the Berkeley for your first Kimberley adventure. Keen fishers should rise early as Berkeley is one of the best spots to have a go at catching a barramundi. After breakfast, take a walk to one of the Kimberley’s most beautiful waterholes, then enjoy a leisurely lunch-time cruise to Koolama Bay. Learn about the wreck of the Koolama and enjoy a short walk to a plaque erected by a relative of one of the survivors. You will find the delights of Tranquil Bay to be irresistible when you go ashore for sunset drinks! Anchor for the night at the mouth of the King George River.

Day 3: King George River, King George Falls

As soon as the tide is high enough, you’ll cross the sand bars at the river mouth to begin your cruise up the King George River.  Your journey upstream reveals a breathtaking river vista to take in as you cruise to the very ‘jewel in the crown’ – The King George Falls! Anchor at the base of the Twin Falls and it’s time to explore! You can climb or take the helicopter to the top of the falls to get the best views. Visit waterholes, swim at “The Crevice” or just relax with a drink whilst eating fresh oysters off the rocks! Just the thought of leaving this magnificence will inspire mutiny!

Day 4 – King George River, Drysdale River, Cape Londonerry

The morning will be spent calming the ‘mutineers’ by enjoying a breakfast with the falls as your backdrop. Cruise back up the King George River for another mighty Kimberley river – the Drysdale. Explore the Drysdale River and catch one of the favourite types of fish, the impressive mangrove jack! The tenders will head ‘up-river’ on a fishing expedition complete with scones and billy tea. You’ll also be able to go for a leisurely walk and do some beachcombing before joining a scenic flight to Cape Londonderry – the northern most point of Western Australia.

Day 5 – Drysdale River

Today you will have an opportunity to see the unique and mysterious Bradshaws rock art. They  pre-date other known examples of Aboriginal culture and are possibly the oldest ‘paintings’ known to man. The heli-picnic at Eagle Falls is always popular with a breathtaking helicopter flight and mouth-watering food alongside a picture-perfect waterfall. The day will be spent exploring local beaches and rivers onboard the tenders You also visit an isolated site in the rainforest where a lone bomber crashed during WWII.

Day 6 – Mitchell River, Mitchell Falls

The Mitchell River is renowned for big barramundi and even bigger crocs. The tenders will head upstream to the scenic Surveyors Creek – a great place for a swim (no crocs here!) Keen fishers will again join the hunt for the elusive barra and there are more opportunities for helicopter flights over an ancient land including the spectacular Mitchell Falls! Join the crew for cocktail hour at sunset before experiencing another unique dining experience.

Day 7 – Mitchell River, Voltaire Passage

Start the day with the ‘hunt for the black-lip oyster’ – one of the guests might be lucky enough to keep a treasure from the sea! You’ll get to see some excellent examples of both Wandjina and Bradshaw art onshore and the waters are alive with queenfish, giant trevally and mackerel. In the afternoon you take tenders to explore Voltaire Passage and surrounding islands. Back on board, join the crew for our pearl party! Enjoy a glass of bubbly and a taste of pearl meat, whilst learning about pearl farming and of course, trying on some jewellery from Linneys, Kailis and Kimberley Fine Diamonds.

Day 8 – Hunter River, Naturaliste Island

Wake this morning in the magnificent Hunter River – about as remote as you can get in Australia. The Hunter is a stunning river system that is lined with dense mangrove forests, surrounded by rainforest and mountains and home to saltwater crocodiles. It has it all – fishing, mud crabbing, bird-watching and simply exploring where so few have visited before. Take a short hike to Jackson Falls or take the helicopter to see even more. Before days end we will hopefully have time for a sunset drink on the beautiful Naturaliste Island.

Day 9 – Prince Regent River, Kings Cascade

Your first stop this morning is Careening Bay to see one of the Kimberley’s most historic sites – the boab tree which Phillip Parker King carved his ship’s name into. Then it’s onto the mighty Prince Regent and it’s outstanding scenery. Reach Kings Cascades and we’ll manoeuvre the True North right under the falls for a refreshing onboard station. Then take another breathtaking helicopter flight to a picnic that you’ll never forget – True North’s mouth-watering cuisine alongside a crystal clear billabong. Then we’ll rejoin the True North for an overnight anchorage off Camp Creek.

Day 10 – Prince Regent River

The ‘early risers’ will be treated to a helicopter flight with a difference – a ‘champagne sunrise’ on the top of a mountain! Spend the day exploring the Prince Regent River– go for a hike and swim in another tranquil billabong. The more adventurous will use the helicopter to fish billabongs that have never been fished and everyone will find their own special part of the river.

Day 11 – Sale River, Montgomery Reef

Spend the morning exploring the Sale River. Fish for barramundi and then join the crew as we ‘ride the tide’ on a classic river expedition and take a dip in a secluded billabong. After an onboard lunch, drop anchor and set sail for Montgomery Reef. The Montgomery is a unique ecosystem that must be seen to be believed – and see it you will – as the coral reef rises out of the ocean right before your very eyes! Water cascades from the reef as the tide falls exposing a glimpse of another world! Turtles, the occasional dugong, manta rays and every imaginable sea creature abound.

Day 12 – Ruby Falls, Raft Point

Start the day with some more fishing– this time at “Three Ways”. Then enjoy a refreshing swim at Ruby Falls where you may not be able to resist our ‘a la natural mud pack and day spa special’! After lunch we’ll find some of the well-preserved Wandjina paintings at Raft Point.

Day 13 – Talbot Bay, Horizontal Falls, Silica Beach, Dampier Peninsula

Cruise to Talbot Bay and see one of the most iconic Kimberley experiences– the Horizontal Falls. The Falls are the result of the extreme Kimberley tides – as the tide recedes, the water rushes through gorges, creating a waterfall effect. Experience the awesome power of the region’s huge tidal range in an exhilarating tender ride and then climb aboard your helicopter for a view of the falls that very few experience! Enjoy a swim at Crocodile Creek (don’t worry – it’s free of crocs) and a walk on Silica Beach. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner to remember as the True North glides past Cockatoo & Koolan Islands, Cape Leveque and down the Dampier Peninsular to Broome.

Day 14 – Broome

All too soon, you arrive in Broome. Take your early morning coach transfer to your accommodation or connecting flights – we hope to see you back!

The owner and skipper of Great Escape has the formula for this just perfect. Casual, but everything just worked perfectly. The travel arrangements to join the boat were exciting (light plane into bush strip), and the Jetranger heli on board made everything very accessible.
