Tour the Gibb River Road
The Gibb River Road is high on many peoples’ bucket lists as it’s one of the few true ‘outback’ experiences left in Australia. The road is a long stretch of red dust that spans from Broome on the West Coast of Australia up to Kununurra/Wyndham near the border of WA and the Northern Territory, and every inch of the way is surrounded by unrivalled bush landscapes – flora and fauna, mountain ranges, gorges and waterfalls.
Depending on the tour itinerary you choose, you’ll be able to explore highlights including Windjana Gorge, Bell Gorge, Galvins Gorge, Manning Falls, El Questro, Home Valley Station and Mitchell Falls. While generally a moderate level of fitness is required on all Gibb River Road tours, each tour has different fitness requirements, so be sure to call of email us for the tour that suits you.
When to travel through the Gibb River Road
Higher water and rainfall levels cause the Gibb River Road to flood during the wet season, making it completely impassable, so the Kimberley authorities close the road completely from November to April.
So it’s best to drive and tour The Gibb River Road during the dry season. Tours usually run from May to October, with June to August being the most popular, so planning and booking well in advance is recommended.
Self-Drive or Guided Tour the Gibb?
While a self-drive adventure is a good way to experience the Gibb River Road, it can be a little nerve-wracking for those who aren’t completely confident with driving on dirt roads. And while concentrating on the road you can miss some of the outstanding scenery you’re passing by. Guided Gibb River Road tours give you the opportunity to explore this unique passage in a more relaxed way – sit back and let your tour guide do the driving, as well as point out all the sights and spots along the way that you might miss if planning your own trip. With both camping and accommodated tours available, there’s plenty of choice. Fully accommodated tours offer private rooms or safari tents while camping tours give you the chance to sleep in a swag under the stars – upgraded accommodation options are sometimes available so speak to us for the best option.
